Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2026/2027: Why the Tournament Is Interesting for Spectators
The Junior stages of the Russian Grand Prix of the 2026/2027 season are taking place in six cities and open the competition year. The level of skating remains high: many participants already have mastered ultra-c elements.
How do junior skates differ from senior ones?
The main difference is motivation. Juniors do not yet have a status to defend, so they are more willing to take risks: they declare difficult content, try jumps that they have not yet honed to a stable execution. The skates are less smooth, but more unpredictable, and the fight for a place in the final continues until the last stage.
The second difference is the regulations. The junior free program for singles skaters lasts three and a half minutes versus four for seniors, and the set of required elements is different. A shorter skate changes tactics: athletes are less likely to save energy at the beginning of the program.
Where the stages are held
The series opens with two consecutive Moscow stages: "Ice of Dreams" at the "Mechta" arena and "Memorial A.G. Gorshkov" at the "Navka Arena". Further tournaments are hosted by Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, and Omsk. Nizhny Novgorod and Yekaterinburg are included in the Grand Prix calendar for the first time this season.
What to watch in the stands
The view should be chosen depending on which elements you want to see. Sectors along the long sides allow you to take in the entire rink at a glance: from here, the program pattern and the distribution of forces throughout the skate are clearly visible. Seats behind the short sides are located closer to the jumping approaches. The lower rows provide an immersive experience, although the sidewall partially obstructs the view.
Warm-ups deserve special attention: during them, athletes often try elements they don't declare in the competition program.
